Melaniferous Primordia, 2025 indicate the first emergence of a new species. Formed from hundreds of hand-built spiked coils, the dark surfaces appear hair-like, almost furred, each element orientated in a shared direction; perhaps the point of their communication.
The two forms gather in close proximity, their interaction suggestive of a courtship ritual or the earliest stages of reproduction. As primordia, they occupy a liminal state: not yet a colony, not yet a lineage, but the first signs of a species on the cusp of becoming.
Through speculative form-making, these hybrid organisms speak to the iterative unfolding I both observe and imagine within the more-than-human world.
These works are sold as a pair.
These sculptures are intended for indoor display. Handle with care and always lift from the base when moving. Dust gently with a soft brush or dry cloth, following the direction of the spikes to avoid damaging the delicate tips. Avoid direct weather exposure and display in a location where the work is unlikely to be knocked, handled frequently, or subjected to excessive moisture.
This artwork is currently exhibited in Big Small Worlds at HIVE, Ulverstone. To allow visitors to experience the exhibition as intended, the work will remain on display until the exhibition closes. Following deinstallation, it will be carefully packaged in the studio and shipped to its new home.
Collectors will receive notification prior to dispatch.
