Green Turtle Sculpture Workshop: A Two-Part Ceramic Sculpture Experience
Create your own ceramic Green Turtle sculpture in this immersive two-part workshop. Learn ceramic sculpture techniques including construction, texture, pattern development, and surface decoration while creating a freestanding sea turtle inspired by the marine environments of Tasmania and beyond. Suitable for beginners and intermediate makers.
Session One: Sunday 1 November 2026
Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm
Session Two: Saturday 28 November 2026
Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm
Workshop Description:
Sea turtles have travelled the world's oceans for millions of years, moving between coastlines, reefs, and open waters. In this two-part ceramic sculpture workshop, you'll create your own freestanding Green Turtle sculpture while learning the foundations of hand-built ceramic sculpture.
Guided by ceramic artist Christie Lange, you'll learn how to construct a strong hollow sculptural form, develop surface texture, and create shell patterning inspired by the unique markings found in marine species. Throughout the workshop, Christie will share the construction methods she uses within her own sculptural practice, helping participants develop confidence in building three-dimensional ceramic forms.
During Session One, participants will construct a freestanding Green Turtle sculpture approximately 20–25cm in length. You'll learn how to create stable sculptural forms, develop surface texture, refine details, and build a piece that is both visually engaging and structurally sound.
After the work has dried and been bisque fired, participants will return for Session Two where they will explore colour, pattern, and surface decoration using underglazes. A transparent glaze will then be applied before the final firing to enhance and protect the surface.
While the workshop centres on the creation of a sea turtle, the skills learned extend far beyond a single project. Participants will gain valuable insight into ceramic sculpture techniques that can be applied to future sculptural work.
Suitable for both beginners and intermediate makers, this workshop offers a rewarding introduction to ceramic sculpture in a small-group studio environment.

Why Two Sessions?
