Coral Sculpture Exploration Workshop

from A$295.00

📅 Saturday 19 July @ 9:30am - 1pm

🕰 Duration: 3.5 hours

💲 Investment:

Standard Workshop: $295 per person
Luxury Coral Experience: $325 per person (includes grazing platter + BYO bubbles option)

📝 Description:

Dive into the intricate and organic world of coral as you sculpt your own reef-inspired ceramic artwork. This hands-on workshop draws inspiration from the diverse textures and forms found beneath the sea. With expert guidance, you’ll transform clay into a detailed, one-of-a-kind coral sculpture that celebrates the beauty of marine life and deepens your connection to the natural world.

Choose from two beautiful options:

✨ Standard Workshop – Includes all clay, tools, firings, guidance, and studio refreshments (tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sparkling water).
✨ Luxury Coral Experience – Everything in the standard package plus a generous grazing platter by East Coast Village Providore featuring artisan cheeses, charcuterie, crackers, fruit, and local treats. You're welcome to bring your own bottle of sparkling wine—glassware provided.

Workshop Flow

1. Welcome + Coral Inspiration Talk (15 minutes)
A short visual presentation exploring coral forms, textures, and the role reefs play in marine ecosystems. Participants will be encouraged to observe the shapes and patterns that occur naturally in coral communities as a way of gathering inspiration for their art making—getting to know the corals more intimately by noticing their intricate forms, textures, and the rhythms of their growth.

2. Sculpting Demonstration (15 minutes)
Live demo showing hand-building and texturing techniques, including:

  • Pinching and building organic coral forms

  • Creating branch-like and encrusting structures

  • Using tools to mimic coral polyps, ridges, and holes

3. Hands-on Clay Building Session (1.5 hours)
Participants begin crafting their coral sculptures with plenty of time to explore form and structure. With individual guidance available throughout, you’ll be supported in developing your own coral-inspired creation, drawing from reference images and nature’s rich design language.

4. Surface Decoration + Detailing (1 hour)
Dive deeper into the expressive potential of your sculpture through surface decoration. Explore carving, imprinting, incising, and hand-tool techniques to bring out detail, texture, and contrast. We’ll also discuss post-firing treatments and glazing options that can enhance the final piece.

5. Sharing + Wrap-Up (30 minutes)

  • Group show-and-tell

  • Discussion on next steps: drying, firing, and glazing

  • Studio pick-up timelines and Q&A

  • Clean-up and final reflections

🎨 Materials Provided:

  • Sculptural clay

  • A range of ceramic tools for texturing and carving

  • Coral reference imagery for inspiration

  • All firing and glazing (explained during session)

  • Light refreshments (tea, coffee, sparkling water, hot chocolate)

  • Grazing platter & glassware (included with Luxury Coral Experience)

👩‍🎨 Outcome:

Each participant will create a detailed coral-inspired ceramic sculpture, fired and finished in the studio, ready for pick-up or postage within 4-6 weeks. Along the way, you’ll develop new skills in hand-building and surface decoration with clay, gaining confidence in sculptural techniques. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the beauty of coral ecosystems—and a personal, tactile artwork that captures their magic.
