Learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing in this personalised pottery course designed for complete beginners. Through a series of private one-to-one or two-to-one lessons, you'll learn how to centre clay, throw forms on the wheel, trim, glaze, and finish your own handmade ceramic vessels.

Course Description

There is something deeply satisfying about transforming a lump of clay into a functional object with your own hands.

This personalised Beginners Pottery Wheel Course is designed for those wanting to learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing in a supportive and encouraging studio environment. Whether you've always wanted to try pottery or are returning to clay after time away, this course provides a structured introduction to the pottery wheel while allowing plenty of space for individual guidance and creative exploration.

Led by ceramic artist Christie Lange, participants will learn the complete process of creating functional pottery on the wheel. Beginning with the foundations of clay preparation, centring, and throwing, you'll gradually develop confidence and control as you learn to create cups, bowls, and other simple forms.

As your skills develop, Christie will introduce techniques for refining forms, trimming, attaching handles where appropriate, and preparing work for glazing. Throughout the course, participants receive personalised instruction tailored to their individual pace and goals.

Unlike larger group classes, these private or semi-private sessions allow for focused learning, immediate feedback, and the opportunity to build skills quickly through dedicated tuition.

Theresa, from Binalong Bay

“Learning to throw on the wheel had been a life long dream and when Christie’s Instagram ad popped up, I knew it was time.

After a two hour ‘tester session’ I was hooked. The 10 week beginners course that followed built a foundation of knowledge in a calm, peaceful and supportive environment. It was a way to escape the daily stresses of life and lose yourself in the process, there is nothing quite like it. Oh, and I ended up with a bunch of lovely pots!

I have since hired Christie’s wheel, had the opportunity to attend further sessions/workshops of hand-building and glaze development and feel so grateful to have Christie in our North-East pocket of Tasmania.”
