Strata Vessel No.01.

A$50.00

The Strata Vessels are formed through a process of accumulation—coil by coil, layer by layer—where each gesture remains visible within the finished form. The surface holds a quiet record of making: pressure, rhythm, and time.

Drawing on geological strata, these works speak to slow formation and compression. Layers build and settle, creating surfaces that feel both deliberate and naturally occurring—echoing systems shaped through repetition and weight.

Positioned between vessel and sculpture, each piece resists exact replication. Variation is intrinsic to the work, with form and surface emerging through a responsive dialogue with the material. The result is a series of singular objects that hold time within their structure.

Strata Vessels - Process:
Each vessel is constructed by hand-rolling coils, building the form gradually as each layer is placed atop the next. Once the cylindrical structure is established and the frilled rim attached, the surface is worked using a well-worn wooden tool, pressing deep, rhythmic marks into the coils to create a dense, tactile texture. The rim is carefully thinned and pinched by hand to form the frill, allowing the clay to soften and open at the lip. Production time ranges from approximately 75 minutes for medium vessels to up to 3 hours for the largest forms, with handled vessels requiring additional time. Each piece is unique, retaining the direct imprint of the maker’s hand.

The Details

  • Size: 7.5 x 7 x 7 cm

  • Medium: Stoneware & Satin Matte Glaze

Each Strata Vessel is hand-built in small batches from BRT grogged stoneware clay and finished with a soft satin matte glaze. Subtle variations in form, weight, surface and glaze are an intentional part of the making process, ensuring every vessel is unique.

Designed as sculptural objects for the home, Strata Vessels sit beautifully on their own or can be grouped together to create quiet arrangements of form, texture and shadow.

  • Hand-built stoneware

  • Satin matte glaze

  • Individually formed and finished by hand

  • Made in lutruwita/Tasmania

  • Signed by the artist
