THE PRACTICE OF NOTICING
A gentle guide to seeing the small worlds around you
Christie Lange Ceramics Studio
An Invitation
We move quickly through the world—past surfaces, over ground—rarely pausing to truly see.
And yet, at the edges of our vision, entire worlds are quietly unfolding.
Lichens mapping slow growth across stone.
Mosses holding moisture in soft, dense clusters.
Fungi rising and dissolving in cycles of renewal.
This is an invitation to slow down.
To look closer.
To notice what is already there.
How to Begin
1. Choose something small
A fragment of bark, a stone, a shell, a patch of moss, a mushroom.
2. Look before you name
Notice colour, texture, pattern, repetition.
3. Move closer
Shift your perspective. Lean in. Look again.
4. Stay a little longer
Give yourself time to see beyond the first glance.
Your Observations
What did you notice?
What drew your attention?
What surprised you?
How did it feel to slow down?
Write it in a notebook.
From Seeing to Making
When we begin to notice, our hands follow.
If you work with clay, begin simply:
press textures, form small shapes, repeat patterns.
There is no need to replicate—only to respond.
A Quiet Continuation
The practice of noticing is something to return to, again and again.
If you feel called to explore this further, I invite you into the studio.
