Clay Whale Tail — Summer Family Workshop

from A$85.00

2.5 Hours • Ages 8+ • All Materials • Two Kiln Firings • Refreshments Included

Join us for a magical creative moment by the sea at the heart of the renowned Bay of Fires! Whether you’re holidaying in your shack, visiting from afar, or simply longing for a joyful family experience, our Clay Whale Tail Summer Family Workshop invites you to connect, create and celebrate together.

Why this is a must-do workshop

When you imagine the gentle ripple of the ocean, the elegant curve of a whale’s tail as it breaks the surface, or the storied shoreline of the Bay of Fires… you’re sensing the very inspiration behind this workshop. As a professional ceramicist with ten years of hand-building experience, I’ve designed this session to deliver:

  • A meaningful experience for families—parents, children, grandparents—who want more than just a passive holiday activity.

  • A hands-on, tactile creative journey that results in a sculptural ceramic piece you can be proud of: a freestanding whale-tail form.

  • A relaxed, playful, summer-holiday setting (2.5 hours), with a sea-breeze studio atmosphere, refreshments and warm creative connection.

The Workshop Experience

Welcome & Inspiration (10 min)
We’ll begin with a brief chat about the ocean, the shape and symbolism of a whale tail, and how the textures of the Bay of Fires – lichen-covered rocks, rust-colours, sea-spray glazes – will inform your work.

Demonstration (15 min)
Watch me model the process: slab-construction, armature support for the tail’s curve, smoothing, joining, texturing. You’ll see how to layer textures, add subtle details (barnacles, crevices, waves) and craft a base ready for glazing.

Creation Time (95 min)
This is your time! Guided step-by-step, you’ll build your whale-tail sculpture in clay. I’ll work around the studio, offering tips, helping with joins, refining forms, and encouraging creative decisions: tilt or upright tail? Textured sea-bed base or sleek stand? Parents and children pair up beautifully here—both can choose their style, or collaborate for one shared piece.

Detailing, Underglaze & Finish (20 min)
Once your form is shaped and drying, we’ll apply underglaze accents (turquoise sea-green, deep ocean blue, coral pink) and create final textures: grooves, lines, “sea-spray” flicks. I’ll show you how to sign your piece (your initials + date) and prepare it for firing.

Wrap-up & Photo Moment (10 min)
We’ll finish with a little photo moment—your piece in your hands—and you’re free to relax, enjoy a refreshment and chat. I’ll coordinate pick-up or post-studio mailing for your finished ceramic in approximately 4-6 weeks.

As you shape your ceramic whale-tail, know that just metres offshore, migrating humpback whales travel past the Bay of Fires each year. Their journeys echo across thousands of kilometres — and pause for just a moment here, at our east-coast studio. It’s a reminder that your creation is part of a living, breathing marine story.

Whales at the Bay of Fires, Tasmania

One of the quietly breathtaking wonders of the east-coast of Tasmania is the annual passage of the great hump-back whales along the shoreline that frames the Bay of Fires. As a place deeply rooted in nature, texture, rhythm and the meeting of sea and land, your studio and workshop setting beautifully align with these magnificent marine travellers — here’s a piece of copy you might use or adapt for your website or marketing material:

The Journey of the Humpback Whales

Each year, thousands of Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) leave the icy, krill-rich feeding grounds of Antarctica and begin a migration that spans thousands of kilometres. Australian Wildlife Journeys+2Tasmania+2
Some travel up the east coast of Australia, brushing past Tasmania’s shores. The Bay of Fires region sees these gentle giants pass by — often quite close to shore — on both the northward and southward legs of their journey.

Why the Bay of Fires is a Great Whale-View Location

  • The coastline’s clear vantage points and exposed headlands mean that whales often come close enough to be seen from land. Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service+1

  • According to the local park authorities, humpback whales (and their cousins the southern-right whales) come sufficiently close to allow “regular sightings” off the Bay of Fires coast. Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service

  • Local photography tours and eco-cruises report whales with calves emerging off Binalong Bay during migration seasons. Luke O'Brien Photography

What You Might Witness

  • The elegant fluke-up dive: as a whale arches its back and lifts its tail (“whale-tail,” a motif you’re beautifully using for your sculptural workshop) before descending beneath the waves. BODC+1

  • A gentle spout of breath on the sea surface, followed by a slow dive.

  • In calmer seas or protected bays, mothers travelling with calves, or juveniles enjoying shallower zones.

  • The silhouette of the whale’s back breaking the horizon against the crisp turquoise-and-orange palette of the Bay of Fires coast — a moment of nature aligning with your ceramic aesthetic.

A Living Part of Our Marine Environment

These whales are not just passing visitors — they’re part of the ecological rhythm of this region. Their migration helps to knit together distant parts of our ocean-ecosystem: feeding in the south, breeding or travelling north, then returning again. This cycle reminds us of renewal, movement, power and gentleness — themes that resonate with your creative-practice of regeneration and connection to living things.

Why It Matters for Your Workshop Guests

For the families and tourists who join your Clay Whale Tail workshop, the presence of whales off the coast adds a tangible layer of place and story. You’re not just making a sculpture inspired by nature — you’re in a location where this nature is alive and passing by. It becomes a moment of wonder, of creative connection, of place-based memory.
